N okia introduced Ovi, the company's new Internet services brand name. With the introduction of Ovi, Nokia is expanding from a focus on mobile devices to offering a range of Internet services. Ovi, meaning 'door' in Finnish, enables consumers to easily access their existing social network, communities and content, as well as acting as a gateway to Nokia services. As part of Ovi, Nokia announced the Nokia Music Store and N-Gage, two services that make it easy for people to discover, try and buy music and games from a blockbuster range of artists and publishers, including exclusive content only available through Nokia.

Ovi internet services
Also under the Ovi umbrella is Nokia Maps, a navigation service that offers maps, city guides and more directly to compatible mobile devices. Nokia aims to bring more Internet based services to Ovi in the coming months. Speaking at the Nokia Go Play event in London, Nokia President and Chief Executive Officer Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo presented Ovi and the new Nokia services for consumers, and spoke about the company's future plans as an Internet company: "The industry is converging towards Internet driven experiences and Ovi represents Nokia's vision in combining the Internet and mobility. Nokia is the number one mobile device company in the world. Looking into the future, we will deliver great devices, combined with compelling experiences and services, to make it easy for people to unlock the potential of the Internet."
Nokia Ovi - Nokia N-Gage games
"We started this journey with our navigation services earlier this year and we are now combining all our services into a single branded offering - Ovi by Nokia. Over the coming 12 months, you will see us integrate new user interface elements, service suites and web communities to Ovi," added Kallasvuo. Ovi is the gateway to Nokia's Internet services, including the Nokia Music Store, Nokia Maps, and N-Gage games. It will also be an open door to web communities, enabling people to access their content, communities and contacts from a single place, either directly from a compatible Nokia device or from a PC. The first version of Ovi.com is scheduled to go live in English during the fourth quarter of 2007 and additional features and languages expected to go live during the first half of 2008.

Ovi internet services - Nokia Music Store
The Nokia Music Store offers millions of tracks from major artists, independent labels as well as a broad range of local artists from around the world. The store is accessible via a desktop computer or directly from a compatible Nokia device, such as the Nokia N81 or Nokia N95 8GB multimedia computer. Browse for new music, buy what you like or add a song to your wishlist to download later. You can easily transfer your purchased songs to your mobile device and with the built-in music player, create playlists on the go and manage your music collection.
Nokia Ovi - Music Store
The Nokia Music Store offers full track streaming on your PC as well as individual track and album purchase. The dynamic recommendation engine and genre-based instant playlists provide access to show you what others are enjoying. The store opens across key European markets this fall with additional stores in Europe and Asia opening over the coming months. In Europe, individual tracks cost EUR 1.00 and albums from EUR 10.00, with a monthly subscription for PC streaming for EUR 10.00.
Nokia Ovi - N-Gage mobile gaming
N-Gage offers an easy way to find, try and buy great quality games directly from your compatible Nokia device. Selecting the N-Gage application on your compatible Nokia device, you can preview available games, connect with your friends, read reviews or download a free demo. Buying games is easy, either with a credit card or by charging to your monthly phone bill. Companies like Electronic Arts and Gameloft are making some of their biggest brands available through N-Gage.

Ovi mobile internet services
"We know that people want integrated access to great content without the constraints of having to sit behind a computer or in front of a TV. With the Nokia Music Store and N-Gage services, you can access the best in music and games directly from your Nokia Nseries multimedia computer," said Anssi Vanjoki, executive vice president and general manager, Multimedia, Nokia. "We expect the mobile device to become the most popular platform - the 'fourth screen' - for enjoying your digital content. Ovi brings our Internet services vision to life, where people can create, share and consume facts, feelings and emotions wherever and whenever."
As Nokia slowly releases piece by piece of its Ovi (http://www.ovi.com/)puzzle, it’s slowly coming together as a single project. We already have Share on Ovi (http://www.symbian-guru.com/welcome/2008/02/nokia-turns-twango-into-share-for-ovi.html) and Files on Ovi (http://www.symbian-guru.com/welcome/2008/07/files-on-ovi-launches-in-beta.html), and now we have the availability of the Nokia Ovi Suite (http://europe.nokia.com/A41159160), which used to be called PC Suite. The Ovi Suite is a 1.5MB web installer package, a similar setup to the Nseries PC Suite. Basically, this is a small webframe that will download the larger component files once on your computer. I think this is a really annoying way to install, because it means you need a constant data connection for the install, which some people don’t have.
In any case, the application should run fine on Windows XP or Vista (sorry, Mac and Linux, you’re not supported offiicially). Features of the Ovi Suite include the typical features of PC Suite. The ability to sync your device with Microsoft Outlook, transfer files, and install applications is there, along with the horrendous Nokia Music Manager application, which I strongly recommend you avoid at all costs.

I’m installing the application now, and will update this post as soon as the installation finishes.
You can download the Nokia Ovi Suite from Nokia Europe’s official pages here (http://europe.nokia.com/A41159160). You can watch the helpful demos here, as well. (http://europe.nokia.com/A41159164)
http://www.symbian-guru.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/nokia_ovi_suite2.jpg
Update: You’ll want to uninstall any other PC Suite that you have installed before attempting to install Ovi Suite, and it does require you to reboot your computer before you’re able to complete the installation.
Ovi Suite is a shockingly complete desktop solution from Nokia. I have to say, I had low expectations, but I’m *very* pleasantly surprised. It looks very much like the web-based Ovi page, with the various icons along the top left, and your information in the top right. The icons along the top allow you to access the various functions, such as Nokia Photos, Map Loader, and the like.
When you first start the app, you’re presented with the option to setup Watch Folders for your media. These folders will be monitored by Ovi Suite, and any changes will be shown. You can upload files directly to your Share on Ovi account, and there is an easy signin box that allows you to connect your Share on Ovi account, or create a new one. The middle box in the top right is a drag-drop-n-upload area that allows you to quickly upload to Share on Ovi. Unfortunately, it seems to be stuck on only uploading to your MyMedia channel, and there’s no option to choose which channel.
You can click the image below to get a full shot of the main screen:
http://www.symbian-guru.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/nokia_ovi_suite3.jpg (http://www.symbian-guru.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/nokia_ovi_suite3.jpg)
The Gallery view can be sorted with all of your media (audio, pictures, and videos) or just a certain kind. In the top right of the whole app is a ‘Search Gallery’ area where you can search through your gallery of media. If you select (but don’t double-click) a file, you can preview it in the small window shown on the left. Right clicking on the file allows you to easily perform a number of different tasks, including sending it to a connected device or uploading directly to Share on Ovi.
http://www.symbian-guru.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/nokia_ovi_suite4.jpg (http://www.symbian-guru.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/nokia_ovi_suite4.jpg)
If you double-click on the file to open it, whichever external application is appropriate will open (Nokia Photos or Nokia Music PC Client). I like that I have the option of previewing within the Ovi Suite, or accessing that file through a more full-featured option.
Thus far, Nokia Ovi Suite runs solidly on my Windows XP Sp2 machine, with a 1.8Ghz Core Duo processor and 1GB of RAM. It’s a bit slow, but I also have TechSmith’s Jing, Adobe Photoshop, and a number of other apps open, so it could just be overall system slowness.
Unfortunately, one of the things that seems to be blindly missing from the Nokia Ovi Suite is PIM funcationality. As the vanilla PC Suite has recently received a number of messaging and PIM integrations (http://www.symbian-guru.com/welcome/2008/07/nokia-pc-suite-v7070-now-available.html), those seem to be absent in the Ovi Suite, which is frustrating. I also noticed that Files on Ovi is not integrated into the Suite yet, so that could indicate updates are planned. To be clear, the typical sync with Outlook is still present, but the ability to manage your contacts within PC Suite, or send messages and that sort of thing, is not, as best as I can tell.
If you scroll to the bottom of the Home screen, there’s a link to see the ‘live’ version, which opens anew web There you’ll see that Files and Sync on Ovi are definitely in the pipeline, and the direct link suggests that they’ll be tightly integrated into the Ovi Suite, as well.
I have to say, as much as I’ve hounded on Nokia for its sucky PC applications, I’m sufficiently impressed with the Ovi Suite, and look forward to future updates adding PIM and Files functionality.
